Seasonal Changes and MS: Preparing for Weather Shifts

For individuals living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), the changing of seasons is more than just a shift in temperature—it can significantly impact symptoms and quality of life. Both extreme heat and cold can trigger symptom flare-ups and worsen existing conditions. By understanding the effects of seasonal changes and preparing in advance, MS patients can better manage their symptoms throughout the year.

How Weather Affects MS Symptoms

Heat Sensitivity (Uhthoff's Phenomenon)

Heat sensitivity is a common challenge for people with MS, with 60% to 80% of patients reporting worsened symptoms in warmer temperatures . This phenomenon, known as Uhthoff's phenomenon, occurs when a slight increase in body temperature—due to hot weather, exercise, or even a fever—worsens MS symptoms like fatigue, motor weakness, or blurred vision. While the effects are usually temporary, they can significantly impact daily life.

I’ve struggled with cold sensitivity more than heat, especially with stiff muscles in the winter. I usually do light stretching, but the idea of warm water therapy sounds great—definitely going to try that this season.

Heat and MS: Managing Sensitivity and Thriving in the Heat

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological condition that affects the central nervous system. One common symptom experienced by many individuals with MS is heat sensitivity or intolerance. Studies estimate that 60-80% of people with MS experience heat sensitivity, also known as Uhthoff's phenomenon. Frosty Challenges: Managing Cold Sensitivity in MS

Extreme temperatures may worsen MS symptoms. Although cold sensitivity is less common than heat sensitivity, it can also trigger various MS-related symptoms such as fatigue, nerve pain, spasticity, stiffness, and depression.

Cold weather can significantly impact the lives of MS patients who struggle with cold sensitivity. Their symptoms may worsen not only in cold weather but also due to a fever or driving with the windows open.

Some MS patients may also suffer from Raynaud's phenomenon, a condition that affects blood flow to the fingers and toes, making them numb, cold, and painful in low temperatures. Fortunately, MS symptoms triggered by cold sensitivity usually subside when the body temperature returns to normal.
